how it works

read the rules, list your items, wait for a trade. no monetary transaction involved. currently on pilot mode.

one

list something

read the community rules. then list what you're ready to pass on. include photos, condition, and what you'd want in return.

there's also a provenance field. where the item came from. who gave it to you. optional, but the stories that travel with objects are often as worth having as the objects themselves.

review

every listing is reviewed within 48 hours.

livras is trust-based. things here are intact, functional, and worth someone else's time. we don't judge content, only condition and intent. the only things that automatically won't be listed are items that are outright harmful or illegal — a line so obvious it barely needs stating.

three

discover & match

approved listings go into the community feed which you can browse below or on IG.

when something you have matches something someone wants, and they have something you want, a match is made. during the pilot, every match is made by hand, so you will receive a DM when it happens. no algorithm.

you can also propose a trade below or via DM.

four

trade

once a trade is confirmed, you can make the exchange either through shipping or local meet-up.

traders get a full shipping guide with their first match. both parties confirm receipt when the item arrives. books and magazines travel well on USPS media mail, usually for just a few dollars.

community rules

take a moment to review the six rules, please.

I.

list honestly.

describe your item accurately. condition, any damage, what it is. I may use a reference photo in the public listing, but I'll need at least one photo of your actual copy. for now, livras facilitates the trade of books, magazines, original work, and other printed materials in the United States only.

II.

this is not a flipping operation.

livras is for people who want to pass things on and find things they'll genuinely use. if that's not you, this probably isn't for you.

III.

don't ghost.

if you've agreed to a trade, follow through. if something comes up — it happens — communicate. silence after a match breaks the trust this whole thing runs on.

IV.

talk about the books.

tell your trade partner why you loved it, what made you pick it up, what it made you think, or even why it wasn't for you. not required, just highly encouraged.

V.

we're all adults here.

I'll do my best if something goes wrong, but I'm not responsible for items lost in transit or trades that don't go as expected. ship carefully. communicate clearly. be a good human.

VI.

dishonesty gets you removed.

this community only works if everyone in it can be trusted. I intend to keep it that way.

list something

fill this out and I'll review it within 48 hours. every listing is curated to ensure only things worth someone else's time circulates within livras. no junk, and nothing illegal or harmful, of course.

one submission per item — if you have more than one thing to list, submit again. for now, livras facilitates the trade of books, magazines, original work, and other printed materials in the United States only.

faqs

livras is a cashless swap community for books, literary magazines, and printed materials. you trade what you have for what you want — no fees, no ads, no money. it was built to extend the life of objects and pass around the stories they carry. it's also a slower, more intentional way of collecting things, one that makes you think carefully about what you acquire and what you let go.

I've been looking for something like this for a long time. a space to trade easily and safely with like-minded people. a space to talk about books, art, and the stories behind the things we own. livras is also a quiet resistance against overconsumption as it asks you to really examine what you bring into your life and what you're ready to pass on.

it started simply: I wanted a book recently and found myself wishing I could trade one I'd already finished for it. figured others have felt the same.

informal swaps are great; livras isn't replacing them. but they do have hidden costs: the coincidence of wants problem, no trust infrastructure between strangers, no quality standard, no matching system. livras builds on a behavior that already exists and gives it the community, structure, and trust it needs to work beyond your immediate circle.

when money enters the exchange, the question becomes: is this a fair transaction based on market value? that's not what we're asking here. what we're asking instead is: am I ready to let this go, and do I want what's on the other side? those create completely different relationships with objects. livras is cashless by design, not as a limitation, but as a philosophy.

the more open your wishlist, the faster a match tends to happen — and it may surprise you. but the deeper answer is that the quality of what you're offering matters more than its popularity. a well-loved, honest listing of something niche will find its person. livras isn't about volume or moving things quickly. it's about finding what you need and passing on what you've outgrown.

you don't have to give up the books you love. just the ones that are ready to move on so you can make space for something that belongs in your library more. livras is actually designed for people who think carefully about what they keep.

all books are welcome. for some traders, annotations are a dealbreaker. for others, a heavily marked-up copy is a feature, a conversation already in progress. be honest about it in your listing and your item will find the right person.

it's a name with four roots. livre, a defunct french currency. libro, book. libra, balance, scales. libera, to set free. each one is infused into what livras is trying to be: a renewed philosophy of exchange centered around genuine value and freedom.

please do. "didn't finish, not for me, but here's why someone else might love it" is a perfectly good listing. the reason I didn't finish it might be exactly the reason someone else will.

absolutely. you get a full shipping guide with your first match. all you really need is a padded mailer and a quick stop at your local post office. most trades cost less than $5 to ship.

and, when possible, you can schedule a local meet-up with your trade partner. always do so safely: in public, at a reasonable hour, and with good prior communication.
